In the graphic novels, he stayed behind in the wilderness. In the animated series and novelization, Alfur went with Hilda when she moved to Trolberg so he could report on city life, and continued to be of great help to her there. Thanks to him, she could sign the proper paperwork to finally see the Elves. While still living in the wilderness, Hilda befriended the elf, Alfur. The two have been together for at least a few years. She has a pet deerfox named Twig, whom she loves very much. No other relatives of her have been seen so far, though she does mention her grandfather (graphic novels)/great-grandfather (animated series) once when discussing the location of her house in the middle of an Elf Village. While the two of them can argue from time to time (though notably more so in the graphic novels than the animated series), they love each other deeply. She is very brave and caring, as described in the official Netflix description. Hilda hates having to disappoint people, especially her friends or her mother and always tries her best to help and support others with their needs, occasionally taking risks in order to fulfill one's request. As of " Chapter 6: The Old Bells of Trolberg", Hilda can ride a bike just fine, and even remarks that she is getting better at it. By the end of the book, she has mastered to ride a bike, and is thrilled by the thought of all the places she can go to now. After this encounter, she tries her best to overcome her fear and slowly succeeds. Then she encounters the Marra who just like in the animated series, uses this fear against her for a nightmare. In the graphic novels, this fear is never brought up, but in the novelization it is turned into a subplot for " Hilda and the Nowhere Space" early in the book, Hilda comes up with various excuses for not having to use her bike (including that she doesn't want it to get dirty). This was used against her by David's Marra. In " Chapter 6: The Nightmare Spirit", it is revealed that there is one thing that frightens her riding a bike, something she never had learned. She is also more prone to mischief in the graphic novels (like taking her role of pretending to be injured for first aid practice of the Sparrow Scouts too far, or going on secret adventures without her mother knowing). Her rude side is played up more in the graphic novels, where she is known to frequently argue with her mother or to easily get annoyed when things don't go her way. Hilda is sometimes rude but is usually very friendly and generous. She is shown not to get scared easily by monsters and can outrun and outsmart them. She loves to draw in her sketchbook and is very kind to nature. In all incarnations of the franchise, Hilda is an extremely adventurous and fearless girl. Because of this changeling spell, her clothing was in Baba's possession. When in shadow, her eyes would glow with a signature red shine. When she was a troll Hilda still retained cyanic hair (albeit slightly more gray in tone), but she had a stone-like skin, uneven teeth and an elongated nose most common for trolls. Hilda will remain this way in the upcoming third season. It is unknown how old she is now at this point. While typically she still looks the same and dresses pretty much in the same clothes, her skirt is apparently no longer a part of the outfit. In the epilogue of the movie, she is notably taller than she was in the past two seasons, due to the scene being set at least a year after the events of the movie. Her hair was shorter and tied into two pigtails. She retained her black beret and tights, but wore an oversized brown sweater with a red straight line and yellow zigzag pattern which her mother knitted for her, a red scarf, yellow backpack, and gray rain boots. When she was younger, Hilda's appearance was largely different. She also often has a brown, sling knapsack, in which she carries various items, including her sketch book and a pencil. She has a Caucasian complexion, like her mother. ![]() Her typical outfit, which she wears both indoors and outdoors, consists of a black beret, a yellow scarf, a red sweater with yellow cuffs, a blue skirt, which is the same shade of blue as her hair, black tights and red rain boots. The cassette drive is off-center on the Walkman, necessitating the addition of another piece to the other side to make it symmetrical (and give Soundwave not one, but two legs to stand on). Obviously, some concessions had to be made in order to turn this into a transformable toy. Soundwave is not a perfect duplicate of this design, but it likely served as a starting point. There is, indeed, a model of the Sony Walkman (model TPS-L2, sold in 1979) that was blue and silver in color, and I think you'll agree it's shockingly familiar: ![]() It makes perfect sense that he would be a reproduction of a cultural phenomenon that would have made him instantly recognizable as a common household object. The Sony brand Walkman was wildly popular in both America and Japan, and it seems that the "Cassette Man" logo on the original Japanese version of Soundwave is a cheeky reference to that. So, it's likely that Soundwave's buttons were actually inspired by this specific design feature.Īs for what Soundwave was actually based on, I strongly suspect the original Microman toy holds the most important clue. However, there were actually portable cassette players from the era that would include arrows on the face of the tape player, to denote the directions the cassette would rewind or fast-forward (handy if you wanted to skip ahead to your favorite song on the tape). If the buttons were on the top of a tape player, the tape would be inserted upside-down. Thus, the buttons to perform tape functions were always close to the bottom, open end of a cassette tape. ![]() The tape head locked in place during playback, and would only disengage when the "stop" button was depressed, causing the spring-loaded mechanism to disengage. The reason for this was that the tape head that actually decoded the magnetic information on the tape was a physical mechanism that had to manually engage, moving closer to the cassette in order to pick up the magnetic tape. Soundwave has a particularly interesting design because all of the buttons that supposedly control his operation are located on the face of the cassette player, rather than on the top or side of the player, which was pretty much the default design for portable cassette players. Therefore, both the Blaster and Soundwave toys are scale representations of audio cassette players, not meant to be microcassette players at all. ![]() There was no such thing as a microcassette boom box in the 1980's, a boom box was an absurdly large and heavy music player you would carry on your shoulder and blast obnoxious rock tunes until your eight "D" cell batteries burned out after a few hours. If that's true, then Blaster must also be a 1:1 scale microcassette player, which is a preposterous notion. Because of this, I think people have naturally assumed that Soundwave must be based on some real-life microcassette player. Soundwave's cassettes were the same size as real-life microcassette tapes, which weren't commonly used for music albums due to their low sound fidelity, but could be commonly found in telephone answering machines and voice-activated dictation recorders. The point is, while it's easy to trace toys like Bluestreak or Sideswipe to the vehicles they were based on, there simply isn't going to be a real-life camera or microscope to which you can point and go, "There, that's Reflector and that's Perceptor." Even the Mini Autobots themselves are role-play items, since they were styled to resemble Takara's super-deformed Penny Racers toys rather than being realistically proportioned vehicles. ![]() The contention was that the robots from the Microchange series were real-life objects that turned into tiny humanoid machines, which is why many of the Transformers characters are "role play" devices like microscopes and guns and cassettes. Where the Diaclone assortment was based mostly on late 1970's or early 1980's vehicles that existed in real life, the Microman assortment was a bit more fanciful. Part of the problem is that G1 is actually a mish-mash of several different Japanese toy lines manufactured by Takara and Bandai and others. In a toy line where pretty much every original Transformers character can be traced back to a specific real-life car or plane or whatever, it may seem strange that nobody's ever been able to identify with certainty the manufacturer or model number that was the basis for Soundwave's design. One of the mysteries that's plagued the Transformers fandom is the specific make and model of cassette player that Soundwave actually turns into. ![]() ![]() ![]() By contrast, if brick is in short supply, players can trade their excess wood/sheep/whatever with the bank at their convenience and often use it right away to build the road or settlement. Stone is particularly vulnerable to scarcity because there's only three tiles, and building a city requires a lot of stone all at once, so it's difficult to trade with the bank to get enough. This means that cities don't get built for a while, which slows the game down, and development cards aren't bought much, which means you might not see the Largest Army or VP card bonuses accelerating the game end. Two factors can cause this: the stone having poor numbers, of course, and most of the stone being next to poor tiles (the desert, the coast, lousy ports like the stone port, other poor numbers). When I see a Catan game drag for lack of resources, it's usually because the stone is in short supply. † only with novices do I really worry about that. Just make certain that no resource dominates in the 6's and 8's. Wheat wound up 3, 11, 11, 12 - and never got rolled. Oh, and the longest game I played was a 3 player where stone was on 6, 6, and 8, and sheep were 5, 8, 9, 9. but in general, no matter how fair the board is, at least one player in a 4 player game will wind up with a sub-optimal starting position. The thing is, a "Fair Board" is merely one that allows all players an equal chance to win. This is especially vital on the 5-6 player map. I've found that after that, you should be able to handle any board that has at least one stone outside the range 2, 3, 11, 12.Īlso, when you move on to randomizing number positions, make certain no 6 nor 8 is adjacent to another 6 or 8, and no number is next to itself. (4b) if two are, swap them with each other (4) no port is touching its own resource. (3) it's may be worth avoiding more than 1 each in the 5's and 9's.† (2) at least one stone is in the 5, 6, 8, or 9. (1) no resource has more than one of 6 or 8 Then, for the next several, use random tile placement and random port placement, with the fixed number sequence, but then swap out a marker so that (And for both senses of only - beginning setup only and only for a few games.) I would advise using the beginning setups only for a few games. Longer Answer: it's pretty easy to generate reasonably fair boards for the starting tile assortment. Short Answer: No, I've never seen such a list. ![]() I'm open to any suggestions in this regard as well. ![]() We have also experimented with a "drafting" of tiles as we lay them down, with rules about putting too many of the same resource touching, or near a port. Is there a list of user created recommended starting positions for tiles? Perhaps for tournament play? What do competitive players do to ensure variety and balance? I understand that the rules say to place the tiles randomly, but it can sometimes lead to long and boring games. I have found a pretty decent tool for generating random boards, but I find myself flipping through multiple ones that place 6s or 8s next to their respective ports, or place all the clay on 3s, 11s, and the like. "new editions of the game also depict a fixed layout in their manual, which has been proven to be fairly even-handed by computer simulations, and recommend this to be used by beginners" wikipedia I noticed it was mentioned online as well: I just bought a copy of Settlers, and noticed that there was a suggested starting layout that is included in the Almanac. ![]() ![]() If so, you have just had a moment of insight. Although the charity heads and the Pilotlighters have a wide diversity of backgrounds and experiences, we share a desire to improve the lives of people around us and believe that a sustainable strategy and a sharp business plan are a good place to start. So my second Aha was a bit more personal: in this enormous city of London I’ve found a group where I fit in. Whether it is a charity going through the process or a new Pilotlighter starting out, we have a common interest and something to discuss. Not only are there many familiar faces among the Pilotlight staff and the Pilotlighters but I feel more comfortable talking to the people there I don’t know. Nine years later it is a different world for me. ![]() When I started Pilotlighting I was hesitant to attend any of the events as I figured it would be like every other event I attended where I stood awkwardly by myself in a corner. My second Aha came after the presentations during the reception. So, my first Aha was that the process works better when everyone fully participates in it. In other words, the more you put in, the more you get out. However, it was that very preparation and scrutiny that led them to a better understanding of their own charities and what they needed to do to achieve their ambitions. The charity execs all talked about how much effort it was to prepare for the meetings and really dissect everything they were doing. What made these Pilotlight projects succeed was a combination of people and hard work. My first Aha moment came listening to presentations from five charity director and Pilotlighter pairs about their experience with Pilotlight what issues they were facing and how they over came those issues. When you have that flash of insight, you accompany it with a cry of “Aha!” (usually silently and certainly not in a public place.) ![]() Often these understandings are Eureka moments-where there is sudden clarity and the thing that maybe you knew all along moves from the back of your mind to the front.
